Sounds of voices drift through the upstairs of our house, waking me in a slow ascent towards
consciousness. My loving partner has kindly started the morning ritual of bringing our 2-year old
daughter from her crib to our bed, where she snuggles with us and has her morning bottle. It's at this
point that I dare to subject my eyes to the brightness of the morning.

The minimal, serene atmosphere of our bedroom greets me as I get out of bed and get into my morning
routine.

The sun streams into the living room and the all-too-familiar strains of the Wiggles' music greets my
ears as our daughter gets her happy-song fix before starting anything too adventurous for the day.

It’s time to shower and shake off the final remnants of sleep after I determine that my email does not
hold any panicked messages from my clients.

Before planting myself behind my desk, there are errands to run and some film to drop off at the lab -
all while making a couple of customer calls and listening to my daily news fix on the all-news radio
station.

Add - a run to the grocery store - to that list of things.

On my way back to my office, odd juxtapositions of stuff behind the local plaza catches my eye and
begs to be photographed.

Every week, a mom's group my partner belongs to meets at a different house, and today - it's ours!
Given the fact that the weather is so darn nice, the play spills out on to the front lawn in short order to
take advantage of the warm sun.

Back in the office, it's time to see what's in the snail mail, start writing an article for a client, make sure
that I note upcoming trade shows, organize some images to run proofs of, make some time to program
all my numbers into the new cell phone and - oh, yeah - make more coffee!

As I stop to look out one of our back windows, the fresh breeze blowing through the house makes me
ponder just how effective my work might be if I set up my office in the backyard now that the weather
is getting warmer ...

Finally ... time for lunch! Out to the front yard I go to partake in some lasagna with everyone.

Wandering the backyard with our daughter after lunch, I'm energized by the sight of all the new growth
around me.

Although I could stay out all afternoon, there are many things left to do before the afternoon comes to a
close. I don the white gloves to let my film scanner run through film from a shoot last week. A real
good time that shoot was ... leaning off a 4-storey-high industrial crane photographing huge sections of
mining equipment that was being heat treated. Good thing I have lots of insurance.

Unwritten rule of the office ... get off the chair for any period of time, and you're liable to lose it to the
cat.

3:30pm rolls around and it's time to pick up my other three children from school. While my 7-year-old
twins revel in their lack of homework, (and I toy with intriguing daylight/flash light balances) my 11-
year-old son works on his bridge-building project. Some grumbling from him about the unfairness of
life ensues.

Before I know it, it's time to wash the dishes that are still lying around from earlier today, cook a hearty
pasta dinner, then collapse on the couch for a brief moment to see what the weather has in store for
later.

I head into Toronto in the evening for the opening of a deliciously sinister and moody photo exhibition
entitled DARK. It is part of Contact - a month-long photography festival held every May in Toronto.

Walking back along Queen Street after the opening, many intriguing sights beckon to my camera, like
the gallery exhibiting the entire inventory of one artist's meals for an entire year.

One enterprising photographer has propped up a projector on his car and is running a slide show of his
work on the wall of a parking lot.

Shuttered shops full of treasures are off-limits for another day, but I make a mental note to come back
and indulge my senses - and my cameras.
