Date: 30/04/07 Off to an early start in our mid-town apartment as the sun streams through the front window.
Date: 30/04/07 Oatmeal, eggs, and tea (an unusually large breakfast) to fuel up for a fun morning of exploring and an afternoon of errands and chores :)
Date: 30/04/07 Into the car for the 8-km trip to the Toronto Islands ferry docks. (Toronto has a great subway system, but it unfortunately doesn't run early on Sunday mornings.)
Date: 30/04/07 Not many people up for a 9 a.m. trip to the Islands!
Date: 30/04/07 A 15-minute trip on a fairly spartan ferry brings us to our destination, Ward's Island.
Date: 30/04/07 Buds on the trees and a somewhat jarring view (for a local) of the downtown skyline.
Date: 30/04/07 There used to be many more homes on the Toronto Islands, but the city expropriated much of the land in the 40s and 50s for recreational uses. All that remains is the small community of several hundred people on Ward's Island. Narrow streets are lined with small homes -- some old and deteriorating, others beautiful and modern -- whose owners formally lease them from a municipal trust. New building on the Islands is severely restricted, and the sale or transfer of homes is restricted. All of this makes for a tight-knit, somewhat enchanted community -- one that lies just a kilometer or two from the bustle of downtown Toronto.
Date: 30/04/07 The southern end of Ward's Island is a broad, sandy beach.
Date: 30/04/07 A breakwater on the southeastern tip of the island.
Date: 30/04/07 A gorgeous view of Lake Ontario. On the other side of the lake is the city of St Catharine's, a short drive from Niagara Falls.
Date: 30/04/07 After a few hours exploring the island, we head onto the ferry for the trip back to the city.
Date: 30/04/07 Everyone's anxious to get off the boat.
Date: 30/04/07 I had taken my old folding camera (a Daiichi Zenobia, which takes 6x4.5 cm images on 120-format film) along on the trip to Ward's Island. I decided to develop the roll of film I took there as soon as we got home. (Most of the work on my photoblog, www.photosensitive.ca, is shot on B&W film.)
Date: 30/04/07 The afternoon was spent doing errands (including a long wait in line at the local grocery store) ...
Date: 30/04/07 ... as well as catching up with friends by e-mail.
Date: 30/04/07 Dinner is a collaborative affair, and a good chance for my wife and I to wind down in the evenings. After dinner -- a little TV, then off to bed in preparation for a new week at work.
